The Port Coquitlam Figure Skating Club began in 1969. It was officially recognized at the 1970 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Figure Skating Association (now Skate Canada). The Club members were coached by freelance professionals by neighboring clubs until 1973 when the PoCo Figure Skating Club hired its’ first Professional Coach – Judy Towers.
Over the years, the club has hosted skating competitions such as the Fraser Valley Zone Championships, BC Section Precision Championships and the BC Coast Region Championships. The club has also produced a dozen ice shows to strut its homegrown talent.
Port Coquitlam Figure Skating Club has had competitors rise to the heights of Canadian Nationals in Sr. Women’s Freeskate, Juvenille Men’s Freeskate and the British Columbia Sections Championships in Ice Dance. The club boasts a long line of Gold Level Test Achievers in Figures, Freeskate, Dance, Skating Skills & Interpretive and additionally, has several accomplished skaters move on to skate in professional ice shows such as Disney on Ice and Ice Capades. Past club coaches, board members and officials have also moved up into the higher echelon of Skate Canada and have been officially recognized for 25 years (plus) of volunteer service. In 2006 Ethel Beckingham a current board member was recognized by Skate Canada with the Volunteer of Excellence Award for nearly 30 years of service with the Port Coquitlam Figure Skating Club.
